The short version is I’ve been working from home since 2001, travelling SEA since 2006 and combining the two since 2014. The long version follows below.
I started working a an independent contractor, coding web sites, in 2001. I worked from home and had a handful of local design companies as clients.
I first travelled in SEA in 2006. Facebook wasn’t a big thing back then so I blogged the trip and posted photos on Flickr (most of which have since vanished, making the blog very text heavy). In four months I travelled through Japan, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Hong Kong and southern China. It was a lot of ground to cover in such a short time but it gave me a good overview of what was there. It was a backpacking style of travel where the aim is to see as many sights as possible with the least amount of money spent.
It wasn’t until 2012 that I returned to the area and spent another four months in Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and China and Mongolia. Through Russia on the trans-siberian railway then Finland and the baltic states. Western Europe followed, via Poland and Slovenia. London and Scotland topped it off with a few days in Dubai on the way back to home in New Zealand. About 9 months of travel.
In the beginning of 2014 I returned to my favourite country of all, Laos, and did some volunteer work (english teaching, computer skills teaching, office IT support) there for a month. Later that year I returned to the same place for another month to volunteer again, this time with digital nomadism at the same time. A month in Cambodia followed with some more volunteer work at a local web development shop in Phnom Penh and a crazy new years party in Sihanoukville. A month in Chiang Mai (a little more volunteering), another in Laos, back to Chiang Mai for another month and then 8 months going all over Philippines. By then it was nearing the end of 2015.
6 months in New Zealand followed by 6 months in Thailand (Koh Lanta and Phuket), Bali, Singapore and Philippines took care of 2016.
2017 will involve in New Zealand for a couple of months and then several months in Philippines. Vietnam and Cambodia are possibilities also but let's see!
